Frequently Asked Questions

What does the MCAT cover?

The MCAT has four sections: Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS), Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. It blends foundational science content with reasoning and data-analysis skills.

How many questions are on the MCAT?

The MCAT contains 230 multiple-choice questions. Chemical/Physical, Biological/Biochemical, and Psychological/Social Foundations each contain 59 questions; CARS contains 53. The section counts matter when you plan pacing during full-length practice.

How long is the MCAT?

The total seated time is about 7 hours and 30 minutes, including the optional tutorial, breaks, and end-of-day tasks. The four scored sections contain 6 hours and 15 minutes of content time. Building stamina is part of preparation, not an afterthought.

What is a good MCAT score?

MCAT section scores range from 118 to 132, for a total score range of 472 to 528. There is no single passing score because medical schools assess scores in the context of their own admissions standards and the rest of an application. Review the typical scores at the programs you are considering.

How much does the MCAT cost in 2026?

For the 2026 testing year, standard registration is $355 in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories. Testing outside those locations carries an additional $130 international fee. Eligible Fee Assistance Program recipients have a reduced registration fee, subject to program requirements.

Can I use a calculator on the MCAT?

No. The MCAT does not provide a calculator, and personal calculators are not permitted. Practice estimation, scientific notation, ratios, and basic arithmetic until the common moves feel quick and familiar.

How should I use MCAT practice questions?

Start untimed when learning a new content area, then add section-style timing once you understand the approach. Review every answer choice, including questions you got right, to identify faulty reasoning or gaps that happened not to cost you the question. A short error log can make those patterns much easier to spot.

How often can I take the MCAT?

The AAMC limits examinees to three attempts in a single testing year, four attempts over two consecutive testing years, and seven lifetime attempts. Since a score is part of a medical school application, it is wise to schedule only when your practice results and preparation indicate you are ready.
