About the HiSET
The HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) is developed by ETS -- the same organization behind the GRE and TOEFL -- and it's accepted as a pathway to a high school equivalency credential in many states across the U.S. If you didn't finish high school for whatever reason, the HiSET gives you a legitimate, widely recognized way to prove you've got the knowledge and skills. It opens real doors: college admissions, career opportunities, military service, and more.
Unlike some other equivalency options, the HiSET is broken into five separate subtests: Language Arts - Reading, Language Arts - Writing (which includes an essay portion), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. You don't have to take them all at once, either. Most people spread them out over a few weeks or even months, which honestly makes the whole thing feel a lot more manageable.
Why Practice Questions Matter
Here's what catches a lot of people off guard -- the HiSET isn't just about recalling facts. The questions are designed to measure critical thinking, interpretation, and how well you can apply concepts to new situations. That's why working through realistic practice questions is so valuable. You get a feel for how the questions are structured, what kind of reasoning they expect, and where your actual gaps are. Reading the answer explanations is just as important as attempting the questions themselves. Sometimes you'll get a question right but for the wrong reason, and the explanation catches that.
We'd suggest starting with whichever subtest feels most intimidating. Tackle it head-on, see where you stand, and build from there. That targeted approach beats trying to review everything at once. And if you find yourself stuck on the math or the writing essay -- or really any section -- our tutors can help break things down in a way that actually clicks. Sometimes a different explanation is all it takes.
