Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NCE?

The NCE (National Counselor Examination) is developed and administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). Passing it earns you the NCC (National Certified Counselor) credential - and it's also the required licensure exam in many states for the LPC, LPCC, or similar professional counseling license. So depending on where you live, you're likely looking at the NCE as both a national credential and a state licensure hurdle at the same time.

How many questions are on the NCE?

The NCE contains 200 total questions, but only 160 of them are scored. The other 40 are unscored pretest items that NBCC uses to evaluate potential future questions. You won't know which questions count and which don't, so treat every single item like it matters. That's the only sensible strategy.

What score do I need to pass the NCE?

The NCE uses a cut score that's set through a psychometric process called equating, which means it can vary slightly across administrations. Generally speaking, you need to answer roughly 97 or more of the 160 scored questions correctly - but NBCC doesn't publish a fixed percentage. Your score report will tell you whether you passed and show your performance across each content area.

How long is the NCE?

You get 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete the NCE. That works out to a little over a minute per question on average, which is plenty of time for most candidates - but pacing still matters. Don't dwell too long on any single item. Flag it, move on, and come back if time allows.

What topics are covered on the NCE?

The NCE draws from all eight CACREP core areas: Human Growth and Development, Social and Cultural Diversity, Counseling Relationships, Group Counseling and Group Work, Career Development, Assessment and Testing, Research and Program Evaluation, and Professional Orientation and Ethical Practice. No single area dominates the exam - you need solid coverage across all eight. Ethics questions in particular tend to appear throughout the exam, not just in the professional orientation section.

How often can I retake the NCE if I don't pass?

You must wait at least 90 days between NCE attempts. Each retake requires a new application and payment of the full exam fee. There's no hard limit on total attempts, but the waiting period and cost add up fast. It's worth investing in thorough preparation before your first attempt rather than banking on a retake.

How should I study for the NCE?

Start by reviewing all eight CACREP content areas systematically - don't skip the ones that feel familiar. Focus especially on counseling theories, developmental models, group dynamics, career theory, and ethical decision-making, since these appear frequently. Practice with realistic scenario-based questions rather than just memorizing definitions. Reading the ACA Code of Ethics before your exam date is also a smart move. And if you're feeling shaky on any content area, targeted tutoring or coursework help can make a real difference in how confident you feel walking in.
